Every physician should reflect on the potential conflicts of interest that could affect their medical practice. Dr. Soza follows the principles of the World Medical Association Statement Concerning the Relationship Between Physicians and Commercial Enterprises and the guidelines issued by the School of Medicine of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
In particular, we endorse the view that:
Although there is no doubt that physicians’ participation in many of these activities can be genuinely beneficial to the general good, the fundamental duty of every physician remains the health and well-being of their patients. External interests must not be allowed to influence clinical decisions (not even to have the slightest possibility of doing so).
Potential Conflicts of Interest
Below are the potential conflicts of interest of Dr. Alejandro Soza over the past 5 years (2010–2015):
- Speaker for MSD, Roche, and BMS.
- Participation in Advisory Board Meetings for MSD, AbbVie, Gilead, Vertex, Roche, and Janssen.
- Investigator in clinical trials sponsored by MSD, AbbVie, Roche, and BMS.
- Research funding from the National Fund for Science and Technology (FONDECYT).
- Shareholdings: Gilead, Enanta, and Achillion.
- Gilead markets, among other drugs, sofosbuvir, ledipasvir, velpatasvir, voxilaprevir, tenofovir, and emtricitabine.
- Enanta holds a royalty on ABT-450, a component of AbbVie’s antiviral drug combination.
- Achillion investigates new antivirals for hepatitis C.
